A not-so-Close Encounter

Denver resident Jeff Peckman is convinced that the centuries of unpreparedness must come to an end. As ABC 7 Denver reported, Peckman is "spearheading a Denver ballot initiative to create an 18-member Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission that would form a strategy 'dealing with issues related to the presence of extraterrestrial beings on Earth' and how humans and aliens can peacefully coexist." Why? Peckman says he has "irrefutable evidence" of extraterrestrial existence....

In Nebraska, July of 2003, a man named Stan Romanek began taping one evening when he thought there was a peeping tom at his window, only to discover an ET-esque figure, with only his 'head' showing, that he later described as "very gentle looking, benevolent, kind of had a soft appearance to it." The film, conveniently, is being kept out of the public eye until it has been officially confirmed.

Supposed experts have verified the video's legitimacy and are seemingly convinced that Romanek has neither the means nor the motivation to create a fake. I wonder who, besides wax-alien craftsmen or lifelong alien-hunters technically have either of those qualifications?

The local news, surprisingly, isn't the only source that is actually deeming this news. Check out the interview with Stan Romanek on Larry King. All over YouTube you'll also find tons of hilarious recreations of the footage in the 'related videos' area.

Regardless, Peckman hopes to use this 'proof' to help gain the necessary 4,000 signatures and $75,000 to maintain his initiative. "We believe that the end result of all this information will ultimately lead to a higher quality of life, a cleaner planet, the availability of technology that will help us in multiple areas," Peckman said.

Considering the fact that such extraterrestrial encounters would (by way of the Bill of Rights?) fall into the hands of the federal government, few are actually sure what Peckman's team would actually be doing per se.

I had the urge to post this story for a few reasons. First being the obviously hilarious fact that people are considering this actual news. As you'll see in the image, this Hey Arnold-ET combo 'alien' figure could be the cheapest recreation of the extraterrestrial I have ever seen. On top of that is the official figure who are actually supporting this. Finally would be the online poll accompanying the article; while 33% of readers said they didn't see any of the choices in the picture (an alien, a pig, a cow, or trees), 21% said they just said absolutely nothing, yet a whopping 41% of voters actually agreed that they saw what they would call 'an alien' in this picture.

Gotta love network news and crazy people.
Still, it makes you think...
