YouTube Sensation. The #1 Jonas Brothers fan. Perez Hilton’s nemesis. The last person who is touched by the sweet music of S-Club 7. A 17-year-old singer/writer from Missouri. The author of three impending books, including The Rumer is . . . and God Blesses All of His Kids. Kristina E. Chen is easily one of the most distinct internet-bred characters since Tay Zonday and all the other pseudo-famous personas in Weezer’s “Pork and Beans” music video. Kristina, however, is far more complex.
Those of YouTube fame are easy to criticize – Chris Crocker cried for Britney Spears, the Star Wars Kid recorded his make-believe light-saber fight, and the Numa-Numa kid lip-synced Numa-Numa. These characters provide you with enough evidence that they are merely ridiculous people, allowing you to laugh comfortably at their plunders. Upon your initial discover of Tina Chen, known as Tinaecmusic on YouTube and Myspace, she appears just as easy to laugh at - her music is simply horrid. Picture yourself trapped in a cube made of chalkboard. Now imagine every person that you have come to loathe and hate over the years. They then proceed to scrape chalk on the cube and stab it with blunt screwdrivers. Her vocal chords are the most out-of-tune creations this side of a pair of broken dog-whistles.
But after a good chuckle, several glaring dilemmas become apparent – A) She has unparalleled ambition, a confidence and determination (specifically to get a record deal, complete her books, and collect one million friends on Myspace) that is admirable B) She loves Jesus. A lot (on her Myspace, above a heart-shaped Jesus picture, she writes, “I love you Jesus! You are the best ever!!). Oh and C) She might have Down Syndrome.
With comments on her Myspace such as “ZOMG!!!!! Tina you r so amazing!!! I am your BIGGEST fan... freal. Pleaz, pleaz, pleaz, pleaz, pleaz PLEAZZZZZZZZ make a video of Madonna's "Like a Virgen!!!" and “have you ever thought about going on American Idol?” and more commonly, “You’re single? No, not Tina! You will find a man! You’re gorgeous and talented. Any man would be lucky to have you! Too bad we’re far away from each other! ;).” It is easy to understand why Tina put up a video where she, at her fan’s requests, exposed herself by loosening up her pajamas. She is living in a world of delusion, at the mercy of her alleged fans.
