Two Gallants = Pretty Bob Dylan

For a San Franciscan duo that prides itself on their threadbare guitar-and-drums sound, Two Gallants packs quite a punch. Together since 2002 but friends since childhood, drummer Tyson Vogel and singer-guitarist Adam Stephens weave gritty, long-winded narratives with folk-blues guitar, often finding themselves compared to the likes of Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan.

Stephens' voice, although ragged, never detracts from the sincerity and, well, prettiness of the songs. In 'Ribbons Round My Tongue,' he sings, "If ever I could love myself/ I'd stop loving you," and in the ballad 'Despite What You've Been Told,' Stephens croons, "You you're just a substitute/ for the one that I hold dear."

While quiet, mellow songs aren't always received with rave reviews, Two Gallants defies all expectations with songs that will send shivers down your spine.

Cat Stevens rocks, and so do these guys. Definitely not overwhelming, instrument-wise, and completely worth the listen.
