A Reel Let Down

Is the writer’s strike still on? It seems that more and more movies are becoming less original. Whether they’re comic books or a series off the New York Times bestseller list, there appears to be a limited number of creative screenplay ideas. Now sure, there are just really good books and yes they did make some cool plots for movies and there are exceptions, but give me a break! How has Tinsel Town let me down, let me count the ways (in the form of movies, of course).

It started with X-Men, Dare Devil, Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Cat Woman, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, and is continuing with The Watchmen, The Spirit, and The Green Hornet. Wow did I forget any? Now I won’t even begin to cover sequels or whatever you call it when a series refuses to die (Star Wars). Its like Hollywood just gave up, and started filming whatever Stan Lee has ever touched. I mean sure the guy is a creative genius and I’m positive I’ve gone into a rant by this time, but come on! As for books, well we've got Harry Potter, Eragon, The Chronicles of Narnia, Twilight, and a bunch more that I’ll only read the cover of.

Aside from what I just went over, there’s something I like to call the new cult classic formula. It seems to boil down into two separate yet equally important recipes o’ fun.
1. Michael Cera + Indie Soundtrack + Pithy Banter
2. Seth Rogen + Mary Jane + some shenanigans + A little more Mary Jane (this time for the viewers)

Now don’t get me wrong, I love Superbad, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, Juno, (I’m such a little name dropper), Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, but really? Is this the best we can do? Now on a serious note, I say this whole-heartedly and without bias. My advice to future generations is to... well screw it, just do a remake! It worked for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

yes! i mean, i kinda am a sucker for those books turned movies, but it doesn't say much for creativity. Something fresh would be nice.
