New Mary Onettes, John Vanderslice, and N.A.S.A. Yeah Yeah Yeahs Remix : Three for Thursday
The Mary Onettes
Jangly opening chords, keyboard bells, and synthesized strings give way to a bellowing echoed voice speaking of 'dark hours'... sign me up. The Mary Onettes are leaving much of the blogosphere sleepless with their haunting cadence of 'now I dare,' and a unique melody line that takes full advantage of the singer's delicate falsetto. Bust out your inner psuedo-emo self and give this a listen.

N.A.S.A. / Yeah Yeah Yeahs
An overrated single from an overhyped album...remixed. That's what I call a losing combination. Looping Karen O's obnoxious orgasm noises makes this song almost totally unlistenable for non-masturbatory purposes. In the spirit of unnecessary remixes, the verses become nearly unrecognizable, and the somewhat exciting chorus of the original song is completely lost by the dulled down background tune that was set under it to contrast the overzealous verses. Dear Music Blogging world-- stop giving so much credit to unimpressive, uncalled-for remixes.

John Vanderslice
John Vanderslice and his soothing voice have a real winner with 'Fetal Horses'. He combines the desired 'natural' vocal tone of any good indie artist with the rare yet greatly appreciated skill of being on pitch. While the chords and the melody are a bit predictable at times, an underlying motif of single piano notes absolutely makes this song his own. From the homegrown electric riff to the free download that Vanderslice is offering, everything about this song just feels right.
