Pet Shop Boys: "Yes" Album Review

Pet Shop Boys: "Yes" Review
By Melissa Schrettner
It’s been 23 years since Pet Shop Boys released their first album, and yet the British duo shows no signs of slowing. It may have been three long years since the release of the last PSB album, but the boys are here to let you know they haven’t lost it. Despite the release of “Yes” marking their 10th studio album, they seem to have no problem cranking out thumping, synth-based songs that never get repetitive.
The first single off of the new album, “Love etc,” is one of the quieter songs on the album, the vocals of which are understated and clearly driven by the beat. The melody, though, is insanely catchy and lends itself to the feel-good vibe of the song—despite some its darker lyrics. “Don’t have to live a life of power and wealth/Don’t have to be beautiful but it helps,” singer Neil Tennant croons, later adding, “Too much of everything is never enough.”
While the single knocks it out of the park, “Love etc” isn’t the only song on the album to do so. In fact, all of the songs are worth a listen because they’re all so different. “All Over the World,” the second song on the album, makes use of synthesized strings and borrows from Tchaikovsky, while in “More Than a Dream,” the rarely heard guitar makes an entrance. “Pandemonium,” a song about Kate Moss’ and Pete Doherty’s failed relationship, not only incorporates brass, but is also sung from the female perspective. “I love you really/ Though I know no one believes me/ It’s chaos every time we meet,” Tennant sings over a very infectious beat.
From start to finish, “Yes” is an album for you to shake your thang to, over and over again—because when it comes to this album, too much is definitely never enough.
