PopSense Submission Guidelines
PopSense will not publish previously published works nor will it publish any articles that are explicitly politically or religiously driven.
Featured Articles
Interesting and/or funny content written for people in the know, by people in the know. We seek to write analytical, humorous, and deeper exploratory posts that often take a creative approach to reflect on the pop culture world. We never just report 'the news' in any capacity. However, since posts often need to be 'relevant,' they will frequently be sparked from news.
The Pitch
Sending in a short pitch of your idea for an article will inevitably increase your chances of being published: This allows us to immediately assess your concept and point you in the desired direction.
The Style
Usually humorous in tone, our writing often tackles some social or cultural trend/idea/topic that simply demands a humorous and insightful reaction. This is your chance to deliver it. Read the PopSense Manifesto for further details.
The Length
Article length always varies depending on the topic. In order to avoid making general overarching statements, articles are generally 400+ words.
The PopSense Manifesto
All PopSense articles shall abide by the following rules:
- We will not violate 'The Politics and Religions Rule' - No politics, no religion. Never.
- We will not violate 'The 'I' Rule' -- There is no 'I' in PopSense, there is no 'I' in journalism (or is there?). Express your thoughts, ideas, and opinions through your writing style, not by forcing yourself into the content. If you absolutely need to express a clear opinion, use 'we.'
- We will not violate 'The Douchebag Rule' -- as in, we won't call anything lame, bad, or stupid when it is already perceived to be lame, bad, or stupid. This type of writing doesn't make a point, it's just stating the obvious i.e. making fun of Lady Gaga is not cool and noting how the Black Eyed Peas kind of suck is just unoriginal. We want deeper analysis than that. Also, it's not cool to make fun of hipsters because everyone already knows they are a 'ridiculous breed' and its just redundant. etc.
- We will not violate 'The Obvious Rule' -- an extension of 'The Douchebag Rule,' but applied to non-douchy things as well. This includes everything from 'attempting to make broad generational statements about obvious shit like 'instant gratification'' to 'saying that mainstream movies are expensive and rely on explosions, and artsy movies are artsy and inaccessible.' Always go deeper.
- We will not violate 'The List Rule' -- This is a well-intentioned post that is perceived as creative but in actuality is random and not beneficial to the reader. Anytime you find yourself saying, "now that (news fact) has happened, what OTHER (things similar to this news fact) could/may/might/will occur?"-- STOP THERE! This is a severe grade-A violation of The List Rule. Now that we learned this lesson about lists sucking, what other CRAZY lists could you imagine Jessica Simpson and bald Britney Spears doing and ALSO sucking at!!!
- We will not violate 'The Don't Give a Shit Rule' - Jon Gosselin, Heidi Montag, Lindsay Lohan, Octomom, Kim/Kloe Kardashian... no lame, tabloid-y celebrities. Again, an extension of 'The Douchebag Rule,' applied to douch-y things, but not just telling you to avoid calling them douch-y, but rather, to avoid writing about them altogether. If people want to read about these type of topics, they will read Perez.
- We will not violate 'The Untimely Rule' - No writing about outdated celebrities or outdated news stories. We don't just mean 'no bald britney jokes', we also mean, 'no writing about things that clearly have been totally talked about and reacted to a few days ago.' Articles must be posted within the time of the 'reactionary period.' Although we are not BREAKING the news, the news we react to can't be old news. If you've been living under a rock, fear not, below are five sources that we can always count on for news:

Pitchfork (music headlines) - http://pitchfork.com/
Elbo.ws (music/what the people are talking about) - http://elbo.ws/posts/
