Michael Jackson’s Death Causes Nationwide Heartache, Totally Sad But Where’s My Summer Song?
During summer, people typically like things bigger, bolder and better. It’s the time of the year when people greedily devour fluffy blockbusters and spurn the music of indie snob in favor of big hooks and glossy productions. Summer is the only time of the year that I will turn up the Top 40 with pride. No longer shackled by my textbooks, I feel liberated by the kitschy crap that Hollywood produces. Gimme gimme more. Every summer, we are fortunate to get that one song that will define the season. It will encapsulate all the summer barbecues, the summer loves and the summer blackouts of that particular year. Last summer, Katy Perry ‘Kissed A Girl’ and we liked it (kind of.) Runner-ups MGMT also stole our hearts with their poppy psychedelic goodness. So what will this summer bring? It doesn’t look like much.
Michael Jackson’s death may have stolen summer’s thunder, causing everyone to retreat to old copies of Thriller rather than listen to the new tunes on the radio. A quick gander at iTunes most downloaded songs reveals many of the King of Pop’s classic songs. (It also includes two Black Eyed Peas songs that sound like complete garbage). As awesome as MJ’s music was, I can’t help but feel like his premature death cheated us out of getting a summer 2009 song. Any moment now, I’m expecting the arrival of another pop princess to release a song about orgies, drugs or whatever else makes great fodder for a summer hit. Until then, I will seek solace in the summer hits of yesteryear. Nelly Furtado singing about being a ‘Promiscuous Girl’ never sounded so appealing.
